Description

A collection of four vintage large-format educational posters and technical charts produced for the United Kingdom Post Office Telecommunications during the 1970s. These posters were part of an official series designed to explain telecommunications technology for educational purposes. All posters feature design and illustration by John Hutchinson ARCA and were issued by the THQ Publicity Division Education Service. Printing was executed by W S Cowell Limited.

The collection includes:

1. Post Office Worldwide Telecommunications: A large world map detailing international cable and satellite links, dated June 1977 and marked with reference Tele Ed 2(3).

2. The Post Office’s Radio Microwave Network: A map of the United Kingdom and Ireland illustrating the network of microwave relay stations and links between major cities, marked with reference Tele Ed 16.

3. Satellite Communications: Goonhilly Earth Station / a Telephone Call: A multi-panelled poster detailing the technical workings of the Goonhilly Earth Station in Cornwall and the transmission path of a trans-Atlantic telephone call, marked with reference Tele Ed 31.

4. Satellite Communications: a Satellite Launch / the World Receives: A technical poster explaining the launch phases of an INTELSAT IV satellite and global signal reception, marked with reference Tele Ed 30.

The posters are printed on paper and feature a combination of cartography, technical diagrams, and illustrative elements. Each poster carries official series numbering and clear attribution to the designer and the Post Office Publicity Division.
