Two Victorian Ceramic Advertising Pot Lids for Vinolia Shaving Soap and John Gosnell and Co. Cherry Tooth Paste
Description
This lot consists of two late 19th to early 20th-century circular ceramic pot lids, typical of Victorian apothecary packaging. Both examples are constructed from white earthenware with underglaze transfer-printed advertising.
The first lid is a domed form featuring brown transfer-printed decoration for Vinolia Shaving Soap. The central text reads PREMIER VINOLIA SHAVING SOAP and FOR SENSITIVE SKINS, with LONDON & NEW YORK appearing below. The outer rim is marked VINOLIA CO LTD.
The second lid is slightly domed and features black transfer-printed decoration for John Gosnell and Co. Cherry Tooth Paste. The border includes the text CHERRY TOOTH PASTE and PATRONIZED BY THE QUEEN. The inner ring states FOR BEAUTIFYING AND PRESERVING THE TEETH & GUMS. The centre displays a profile portrait of Queen Victoria, and the lower right area identifies the manufacturer as PREPARED BY JOHN GOSNELL & CO LONDON.
