A Pair of Mid-20th-Century Orientalist Desert Landscapes by A. Derwent
Description
A pair of mid-20th-century Egyptian desert landscapes executed in watercolour and gouache on paper. The compositions are stylised examples of the Orientalist genre, typical of the decorative works produced during the mid-century period. One painting depicts the Great Pyramids of Giza silhouetted against a pale sky, with a foreground featuring a reflective oasis, palm trees, and a figure in traditional blue robes leading a laden camel. The second work illustrates a caravan of camels and figures traversing a sandy plain punctuated by palm trees, with ancient architectural ruins and columns visible in the background. Both artworks are signed A. Derwent in the lower-left corner. The paintings are presented in simple cream-painted wooden frames behind glass.
