Lot 60:
A Patinated Bronze Sculpture after Guillaume Coustou the Elder, The Marly Horse
Description
This patinated bronze sculpture is a cast after one of the Marly Horse marble groups by Guillaume Coustou the Elder, originally commissioned for the Château de Marly in the 1740s. The composition features a powerful rearing stallion with a wild, voluminous mane being restrained by a muscular, semi-nude groom. The figures are set upon an integral, textured bronze base designed to resemble rocky ground. The piece exhibits a deep chocolate-brown patina, with naturalistic highlights where the surface has been handled. The reins are fashioned from separate metal bands. No visible signatures or foundry stamps are present on the base or figures. This cast likely dates to the late 19th or early 20th century.
