Lot 149:
Jean Beraud (1849-1936), Outside the Vaudeville Theatre
Description
This work depicts a bustling Parisian street scene outside the Theatre du Vaudeville during the Belle Epoque, rendered in a detailed realist style. The composition captures a crowd of figures dressed in late 19th-century fashion, including men in top hats and long overcoats and women in period dresses, gathered beneath the theatre’s ornate wrought-iron and glass canopy. The background shows a damp city boulevard with bare trees and a traditional Morris advertising column, with the artist capturing the soft reflections of the figures on the rain-slicked pavement. The work is signed in the lower left corner Jean Beraud. It is housed in a substantial, dark-toned moulded wood frame.
