Lot 186:
A Solomon Islands Style Carved Hardwood Ceremonial Paddle
Description
A ceremonial paddle hand-carved from a single piece of dense, medium-brown hardwood. The object features a long, slender handle with a circular cross-section that transitions into a broad, elongated, leaf-shaped blade tapering to a point. The blade is decorated on both faces with incised geometric motifs situated on either side of a central longitudinal rib. These motifs include several rows of diamond-shaped lozenges and a rectangular panel filled with diagonal hatched lines creating a chevron effect. A circular motif is carved at the base of the blade where it meets the shaft. The form and decorative patterns are characteristic of ethnographic objects from Melanesia, specifically the Solomon Islands.
