Lot 195:
A Collection of Stoneware Tableware in the Arabesque Pattern Attributed to Denby Pottery
Description
A collection of British studio-style glazed stoneware tableware in the Arabesque pattern, also known as Samarkand, attributed to Denby Pottery and designed by Gill Pemberton during the 1960s. The items are characterised by a distinctive matt dark olive-brown exterior glaze and a contrasting glossy duck-egg blue or pale grey interior. The assortment includes a milk jug or creamer with vertical ribbing, an open sugar bowl with similar ribbing, and a large shallow circular dish with deep radial ribbing. The group also features a tall cylindrical pot, two lidded canisters of varying heights with button finials, and two footed goblets, one of which is decorated with a stylized floral motif. Completing the set are two small bowls or egg cups and a pair of salt and pepper shakers, all featuring impressed bands of quatrefoil or clover motifs. The pieces exhibit a combination of moulded and impressed decorative techniques typical of this mid-century series. No maker marks are visible on the bases in the provided photograph.
