An English Porcelain Teacup and Saucer in the Imari Style Attributed to Derby
Description
An English porcelain teacup and saucer set, attributed to the Derby factory, decorated in a traditional Imari pattern. The pieces are hand-painted with underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron red enamels, further embellished with extensive gilding. The design features alternating panels of stylised floral motifs, including chrysanthemums and peonies, interspersed with geometric brocade borders and floral sprays. The interiors of both pieces are plain white, with a gilded band around the inner rim of the cup and a gilded edge to the saucer. Both pieces bear hand-painted marks in red script to the base; the saucer displays a script letter ‘D’ above the number ’31’, and the cup displays a similar script letter ‘D’.
