Lot 179:
An Assortment of Decorative Ceramics including a Figural Tobacco Jar, Majolica Style Wares, and Armorial Porcelain
Description
An assortment of decorative ceramics from the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection features a figural tobacco jar and cover modelled as the head of a Black man with a pipe, finished in a glossy brown glaze with hand-painted details to the eyes and pipe. A visible seam indicates the division between the lid and the base. Included is a porcelain teacup and saucer, transfer-decorated with the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom and bearing a blue underglaze mark attributed to Hammersley and Co. of Longton, comprising a crown over a circular border with a central letter H. The lot also contains a large majolica-style pedestal centrepiece or font, heavily moulded with vine leaves and grape clusters in shades of yellow, green, and blue. Accompanying items include a matching grape-moulded earthenware jug, an oval creamware platter with a coordinating small pitcher, an earthenware wall pocket moulded with peaches against a dark ground, and three small figurines depicting ladies in period and folk costume.
