Lot 209:
After William John Huggins, East Indiamen in the China Seas Print
Description
A large 20th-century after the original composition East Indiamen in the China Seas by William John Huggins (1781 to 1845). The maritime scene depicts a fleet of British merchantmen and men-of-war navigating a turbulent sea under a dramatic, overcast sky. The central ship of the line is rendered in full sail, exhibiting fine detail in the rigging and gun ports. The sea is depicted with textured, impasto brushwork to highlight the white foam of the cresting waves. The painting is presented in a mid-century wooden frame with a dark stained outer moulding and a pale, bevelled inner liner. No signature or date is visible.
Width: 94 cm.
