This antique manual laundry agitator, often referred to as a wash pump or plunger, dates from the late 19th or early 20th century. It is constructed from a combination of wood and metal. The tool features a turned wooden T-handle with a metal cross-brace, mounted on a central metal rod. The main body consists of a cylindrical core enclosed in a fine wire mesh, terminating in a bell-shaped metal base. The top metal plate of the pump features embossed lettering that includes the words PATENT WASH PUMP and the slogan SAVES HOURS OF LABOUR. A central brand name is present but is not clearly legible due to wear. This type of domestic device was designed to be plunged up and down in a wash tub to force soapy water through fabric fibres.
