Lot 196:
A Set of Six Indian Copper and Brass Seer Measuring Vessels by J.N. Kansara and Others, Bombay, Mid-20th Century
Description
A graduated set of six traditional Indian measuring vessels, comprising five cylindrical measures and one larger handled vessel. Each piece is constructed with a copper body reinforced by brass rims and bases. The cylindrical measures are calibrated according to the traditional South Asian Seer unit of measurement, which was commonly used for dry and liquid goods before decimalisation. The top brass rims are incised with fractional capacities including 1 Seer, 1/2 Seer, 1/4 Seer, 1/8 Seer, and 1/16 Seer. Stamped manufacturing marks are visible on the copper bodies, including a cartouche for J.N. Kansara, Kansara Chawl, Bombay 2 and the mark B 41 on the 1/4 Seer measure. The 1/2 Seer vessel is marked 8 52, likely indicating a production date of 1952, alongside partial text reading Athalal and Pa Chawl. The largest cylindrical measure is marked Manufacturers, Bombay No. 11. These vessels originate from the Kansara Chawl district of Mumbai, an area historically renowned for its community of coppersmiths and metalworkers.
