A Collection of Ancient Greek, Roman Imperial, and British Coins and Banknotes
Description
A collection of historical coinage and paper currency accompanied by reference material. The numismatic portion, housed in individual paper envelopes with handwritten identifications, includes an ancient Greek bronze from Caria, Mylasa, attributed to Eupolemus (late 4th century BC). Roman imperial coinage is represented by bronze and billon issues including Constantine I from the Ticinum and Nicomedia mints, Constantine II as Caesar from the Siscia mint and a campgate reverse AE3 type, and Tetricus I with a Pax Aug reverse. British silver coinage includes a Victoria 1884 threepence, an Edward VII shilling, and a 1906 sixpence. The lot also features a nineteenth-century bronze-gilt card counter, circa 1820 to 1870, imitating a 1798 George III spade guinea.
The banknotes comprise four Bank of England series C notes including three one pound notes with the printed signature of Chief Cashier J. S. Fforde (serial numbers N08B 631750, HW01 856706, and R34E 608043) and one ten shilling note with the printed signature of Chief Cashier J. Q. Hollom (serial number 61B 241005). United States currency includes a series 1950 D five dollar bill bearing serial number D 013491802 C. The collection is supplemented by three printed reference sheets illustrating various medieval and early modern British coin types.
