Lot 279:
A hand-painted porcelain bud vase in the Kutani style, Japan, Showa period (1926-1989) or later being 16 cm tall
Description
A small porcelain bud vase of teardrop form with a flared neck and rim. The piece features a pale celadon-toned ground decorated with hand-painted overglaze enamels in a palette of coral red, cobalt blue, yellow, and green, outlined in black. The main decorative scene depicts three figures in traditional Japanese dress, including kimonos, positioned within a garden setting featuring a bamboo trellis fence and flowering blossoms. The reverse is decorated with a stylized landscape including a thatched-roof building, distant blue mountains, and reeds rendered in fine brushstrokes. The rim is finished with a solid band of coral red enamel.
The neck of the vase bears faint black markings that are too fragmentary and faded to be legible as specific characters or a signature. The underside of the circular base is glazed and shows a slight impression from the manufacturing process, but has no readable maker’s marks or stamps. The porcelain body exhibits scattered kiln flecks and small firing imperfections within the glaze typical of export wares.
