A Royal Doulton glazed earthenware character jug depicting the Shakespearean character Sir John Falstaff. The piece is modelled as a bust of a bearded man wearing a red doublet and a black hat which forms the rim and spout of the vessel. The handle is formed by the character’s arm. The decoration features hand-painted polychrome details over a moulded body.

The base bears a printed black backstamp featuring a crown above a circular mark containing the words ROYAL DOULTON around a central four-leaf symbol and MADE IN ENGLAND. Below this is the model name Falstaff, the reference number D 6287, a copyright mark reading COPR 1949, and the company name DOULTON & CO LIMITED. Additionally, there is a handwritten black numeral 62 on the base.
