Lot 5:
An English Handmade Wood and Engraved Brass Cribbage Board c.1920
Description
This early 20th-century handmade cribbage board features a dark wood body with an inset brass scoring plate. The rectangular brass plate is intricately decorated with foliate and scrollwork engraving throughout the field. Centred within a circular cartouche is an engraved monogram consisting of two stylised, cursive characters that appear to be JJ. The plate is drilled with four rows of scoring holes.
The wooden body is constructed with an internal compartment designed to house scoring pegs or playing cards, accessible from either end. One end is fitted with a brass swivel locking bar secured by a central pin. The opposite end features two circular apertures, which may have originally accommodated a secondary closure or served as finger holes for sliding an internal tray.
The underside of the base bears a yellowed paper adhesive label with handwritten ink text reading: JOE JOHNSON UNCLE JOE’S CRIB SET WHICH HE MADE AT THE STEEL-WORKS (c 1920) (Sheffield). The item exemplifies worker-made social history pieces from the Sheffield steel industry.
