Lot 81:
Two Sterling Silver Table Items Including a Victorian Pepperette and Edwardian Cream Jug
Description
This lot comprises two pieces of sterling silver hollowware from the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. The first item is a miniature urn-shaped pepperette featuring a pedestal base and twin scroll handles. The body is decorated with a reeded band, and it is fitted with a detachable perforated lid topped with a small finial. The side of the body bears a full set of English hallmarks: a walking lion passant for sterling silver, a leopard’s head for the London Assay Office, a Gothic lowercase ‘f’ date letter for 1881, and a maker’s mark in a quatrefoil punch reading ‘H W & Co Ld’ for H. J. Lias & Son (Henry John Lias & James Wakely).
The second item is a small tripod cream jug designed in the George II style. It features a baluster-shaped body with a crimped or frilled rim and stands on three cast hoof-style feet. The hallmarks on the side of the body include a walking lion passant for sterling silver, an anchor for the Birmingham Assay Office, and a lowercase ‘e’ date letter for 1904. A maker’s mark is present below the hallmarks but is not clearly legible as a name. Both items are constructed from solid sterling silver.
Weight: 74.39g (combined).
