Lot 133:
A hand-carved wood decorative wall mask in the Central African style
Description
A hand-carved decorative wall mask fashioned from a single piece of wood. The object is designed in the style of Central African ethnographic carvings, featuring an elongated tripartite form. The central register depicts a stylized face with almond-shaped apertures for eyes, a broad nose with horizontal ridges, and a small mouth. The forehead and chin sections incorporate geometric openwork cutouts and repeating incised patterns, including cross-hatching and curvilinear motifs. The surface is finished with a reddish-brown stain, with darker pigments applied to the recessed areas to accentuate the carving. The reverse reveals rough-hewn tool marks from the hollowing process and is finished with a consistent reddish-pink wash. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are present on the item.
Length: 63 cm.
