Description

1952 South African silver 5 shillings (Crown) commemorative coin, catalogued as KM# 41. The obverse features the portrait of King George VI with the inscription GEORGIVS SEXTVS REX. The reverse depicts Jan van Riebeeck’s ship, the Drommedaris, with the dates 1652-1952 and the denomination 5s. The issuer’s name is rendered in English and Afrikaans as SOUTH AFRICA and SUID-AFRIKA. The piece is struck in .500 fine silver with a milled edge. This issue was minted to commemorate the tercentenary of the founding of Cape Town by Jan van Riebeeck.
