Lot 43:
A Collection of 1940 Dunkirk Veterans Association Commemorative Items and Ephemera
Description
This lot comprises a group of commemorative materials related to the 1940 Dunkirk Veterans Association. The primary item is an unofficial Dunkirk Medal (Médaille de Dunkerque), constructed from bronze-coloured metal. The obverse features the coat of arms of Dunkirk, depicting a lion rampant over a ship, set within a laurel wreath and superimposed with crossed swords and the inscription DUNKERQUE 1940. The medal is suspended from its original yellow ribbon with red vertical stripes and is housed in a rectangular white plastic presentation case. Included is a large-format commemorative certificate issued by La Ville de Dunkerque, titled En mémoire des Combattants de Mai et Juin 1940. The document bears the printed signature of Claude Prouvoyeur and is hand-signed in ink by representatives of the veterans association, including a signature for A. Cole. It is numbered LIVRE D’OR No 35053 at the lower left. The lot also contains a printed membership card for the 1940 Dunkirk Veterans Association on green cardstock and a large brown paper mailing envelope with the association’s printed heading. Adhered to the envelope is a photographer’s card for Geoffrey’s of 11 Boar Lane, Leeds, bearing a date stamp of 18 AUG 1954 and handwritten cursive text reading Cleveland Co.
