Description

Attributed to Pearsons of Chesterfield, this large 19th-century salt-glazed stoneware storage jar or crock and matching cover is finished in a deep, glossy tobacco-brown glaze. The vessel of globular form features twin integrated lug handles with horizontal ribbing. The body is decorated with a broad central band of stamped repeating floral rosettes, demarcated by a raised line of beading to the upper edge. The recessed domed cover is decorated with concentric circular mouldings and finished with a central turned knob. The glaze and decorative motifs are characteristic of the Derbyshire and South Yorkshire potteries active during the mid-to-late 19th century. No maker’s marks or capacity stamps are visible in the provided images.
