Lot 131:
A Collection of Figural Ceramic Chess Pieces in the Style of the Beneagles Thistle and Rose Set
Description
A collection of decorative figural ceramic chess pieces, modelled in the Thistle and Rose pattern associated with Beneagles Scotch Whisky. The pieces are crafted in two contrasting finishes: unglazed white bisque porcelain and a matte black stoneware in the basalt tradition. The set features a Renaissance-themed historical design. The Kings and Queens are depicted as tall, robed monarchs with crowns; the Bishops appear in ecclesiastical mitres; the Knights are shown as standing figures in period attire; the Rooks are fashioned as square, crenellated castle towers with detailed masonry moulding; and the Pawns are represented by smaller figures in various historical costumes. This design was produced in the mid-to-late 20th century, typically by British potteries such as Beswick or Wade. No maker’s marks are visible on the exterior of the pieces.
