Lot 149:
A Pair of Late Victorian Style Turquoise and Claret Porcelain Vases with Classical Figure Panels
Description
A pair of late 19th or early 20th-century decorative porcelain vases of baluster form. Each vase features a flared, scalloped rim and a pair of ornate, scrolled handles decorated with acanthus leaf motifs. The vases are finished in a pale turquoise ground, with a contrasting deep claret glaze applied to the rims and circular pedestal bases. The central decoration consists of a large, gilt-bordered oval cartouche on each vase. These contain transfer-printed and hand-tinted scenes of female figures in classical dress, set within landscape backgrounds. One figure is depicted carrying a basket of produce against a backdrop of bare trees, likely representing Autumn or Winter; the other represents Spring or Summer, depicted in a purple robe among lush greenery. The style incorporates Rococo-inspired handles and Neoclassical-themed central panels. No factory marks or signatures are visible.
