Description

This cupronickel five-pound coin was issued by the Bailiwick of Guernsey in 2009 to commemorate the centenary of naval aviation. The obverse features the fourth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, as indicated by the IRB initials beneath the truncation, and is inscribed ELIZABETH II and BAILIWICK OF GUERNSEY 2009. The reverse depicts a biplane taking off from the deck of a naval vessel, with the inscriptions 100 YEARS OF NAVAL AVIATION and the denomination FIVE POUNDS, alongside a small FLY NAVY logo. The coin is silver in colour with a proof-like finish and is housed in a clear protective acrylic capsule. It is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from Westminster, which titles the item as part of The Centenary of Naval Aviation Silver Coin Collection, although the specific technical specification grid on the certificate identifies the metal composition as cupronickel.
