Lot 92:
A Collection of British Lithographed Tin and Glazed Pottery Still Banks
Description
A collection of British thrift-related still banks dating from the early-to-mid 20th century. The group includes a cylindrical lithographed tin pillar box bank manufactured by Chad Valley Co. Ltd., Harborne, marked with the ER royal cipher and a collection timetable, with the maker’s mark and by appointment warrant on the reverse. A taller cylindrical tin bank is marked Post Office Savings Post with the GR cipher and features a colourful lithographed maritime character on the reverse, resembling the mascot for Keen’s Mustard. A small drum-shaped tin bank commemorates the coronation period, featuring a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and a GR cipher. The assortment also contains a book-form tin bank decorated with a maritime illustration of a sailor or cavalier on a quay, and a metal Post Office Savings Bank book bank with a red leatherette-effect covering and embossed gilt royal coat of arms. Ceramic examples include a figural bank of a seated man and a building-shaped bank in the form of a cottage, both finished in a brown treacle glaze.
