Late 19th Century Japanned Metal Trinket Box with Hand-Painted Floral and Butterfly Decoration

A rectangular lidded box constructed from tinplate or sheet iron, featuring a traditional japanned finish. The exterior is coated in a black lacquer and decorated with hand-painted botanical motifs. The design includes white daisy-like flowers with yellow centres, clusters of small white blossoms, and a single yellow-toned butterfly. The interior of the box is finished in a contrasting red lacquer, characteristic of 19th-century japanned metalware produced in British industrial centres such as Bilston, Birmingham, or Pontypool. The box is of simple rectangular form with a pull-off lid. There are no visible maker’s marks or inscriptions.
