Lot 114:
A Mid-20th Century Japanese Polychrome Porcelain Vase in the Chinese Style
Description
A Japanese porcelain vase of rounded baluster form with a cylindrical flared neck and a stepped foot, both finished with gilded rims. The body is decorated in a polychrome palette with a narrative scene in the Chinese style, depicting figures in traditional dress within a garden setting featuring a gnarled pine tree and a moon gate. The neck is embellished with a decorative band of floral scrolls featuring a central purple peony against a cream-yellow ground, bordered by scrolling ruyi-style patterns. The lower section of the vase features a geometric and floral border in complementary colours. The base bears a green stamped mark in Japanese characters. The top row reads 芸術陶器 (Geijutsu Toki), translating to Artistic Ceramics. The bottom row reads 伊太利 (Itari), a phonetic spelling for Italy, likely indicating a specific brand or export line produced in Japan during the mid-20th century.
Height: 25 cm.
