Lot 182:
A Collection of East Asian Blue and White Porcelain Vessels
Description
This group of East Asian porcelain vessels consists of several items decorated in underglaze blue. One piece is an octagonal bowl with a lobed rim and a brown iron-oxide dressing known as kuchi-beni. The interior is painted with two wrestling figures, likely sumo, while the exterior features panels of alternating geometric diaper patterns and floral sprays. The base of this bowl bears a vertical four-character mark in underglaze blue reading 阿仙洞窯 (Asendo-gama), identifying the piece as Arita ware from Japan, mid to late 20th century. The collection also includes a circular two-part incense burner (koro) decorated with scrolling dragons and clouds; the lid is finely reticulated with a honeycomb lattice pattern and dragon medallions. A square covered box with rounded corners is decorated with dense scrolling foliate motifs and features the Chinese Double Joy (囍) character on the side. A larger circular bowl with an undulating lobed rim depicts boys (karako) in a landscape with pine and bamboo. The collection is completed by a small lobed bowl or condiment dish decorated with large floral blooms, likely peonies.
Dimensions: Various sizes.
