Lot 236:
A Victorian Figured Coromandel Stationery Box
Description
A rectangular stationery box constructed with figured coromandel wood veneers, featuring distinctive dark swirling grain patterns against a warm brown ground. The exterior comprises a flat lid with cross-banded edges and a single brass escutcheon to the front. The box is supported by four turned wooden bun feet. The interior of the lid is lined with a red floral damask fabric. The base interior contains several vertical wooden slots along the left-hand side for stationery storage. It includes a small compartment lined with red velvet and a solid wood block with two circular apertures designed to hold inkwells. A large recessed area suggests the previous presence of a removable tray or writing surface which is no longer present. No maker marks or stamps are visible on the hinges, lock plate, or base.
Width: 30 cm
Depth: 23.5 cm.
