Description

An English quartersawn oak stationery cabinet of rectangular form with a sloped front, decorated in the Arts and Crafts style with heavy brass strap-work and decorative studs. The double doors open to reveal an interior fitted with five tiers of scalloped horizontal dividers for sorting correspondence. The base of the interior features a central recessed pen tray flanked by two circular recesses designed for inkwells. The interior of the right-hand door contains an inset white porcelain or milk glass memo board featuring handwritten pencil notations including the numbers 71754 and 15 9. A single full-width drawer at the base provides storage for an assortment of accessories, which currently includes two wooden dip pen shafts, several rectangular chalk or slate pencils, and a small brush with a blue thread tassel. The style is highly characteristic of designs by manufacturers such as Parkins and Gotto.
