A pair of earthenware commemorative mugs produced by Royal Doulton to mark the conclusion of the Great War. Each mug features sepia transfer-printed decoration under a clear glaze. The principal design consists of a central cartouche inscribed Victory and Peace 1919, flanked by a British soldier and an artillery field gun. A banner above lists the Allied nations: Great Britain and Her Glorious Colonies, Japan, Montenegro, Portugal, Belgium, America, France, Italy, Serbia, and Roumania. The reverse depicts a seated personification of Britannia holding a trident, with a shield inscribed Pro Patria, set against background vignettes of a contemporary biplane and a battleship. The base of each mug carries a presentation inscription reading Presented by the Caerphilly Urban District Council. Below this is the Royal Doulton factory mark, featuring a lion standing upon a crown over a circular device, and the registered design number Rd No 666159.
