Description

This circular commemorative plaque is cast in high relief from brass or bronze and mounted on a dark-stained circular wooden base. The central composition features a prominent relief figure of Coxswain Jack Crocombe in traditional lifeboat gear, positioned alongside a detailed scene of the lifeboat Louisa being transported on a carriage. The background displays an etched schematic map of the North Devon coastline and Exmoor, marking locations including Lynmouth, Lynton, Countisbury, County Gate, and Porlock Weir under the heading BRISTOL CHANNEL and EXMOOR. The top of the plaque bears a cast narrative inscription: In January 1899 the Lynmouth lifeboat Louisa was hauled thirteen perilous miles by night over the heights of Exmoor to give the assistance of the three-master Forrest Hall in distress in Porlock Bay. The lower border is inscribed THE OVERLAND LAUNCH, LYNMOUTH 1899. The metal surface features a stippled background with polished highlights on the raised relief areas to provide depth and contrast. No maker’s marks are visible on the face of the item.
