Description

A late 19th-century Victorian coal scuttle, or purdonium, constructed from solid oak. The piece features a characteristic rectangular form with a sloping, hinged front lid and a vertical slot at the rear designed to hold the companion shovel. The exterior is fitted with a heavy, cast brass bow-shaped carrying handle mounted to the top and a small brass pull-knob on the lid. The interior contains a removable sheet metal liner for holding fuel. Accompanying the scuttle is a period coal shovel with a brass blade and a turned wooden handle. The underside of the hinged lid bears a series of dark stamped characters; however, these marks are not legible as a name or specific identifier due to surface wear.
