Lot 333:
A late 19th-century French black slate and marble three-piece clock garniture by Japy Freres
Description
A French three-piece mantel clock garniture comprising a central architectural clock and a pair of matching rectangular spill vases. The cases are constructed from black slate featuring inlaid panels of variegated brown and beige marble. The front and side surfaces are decorated with incised and gilded scrolling vine and floral motifs. The central clock has a rectangular form with fluted pilasters at the corners and a balustraded gallery to the top. The circular gilt-brass dial is set with black Roman numeral hour markers and ornate gilt-metal hands, enclosed within a glazed, beaded brass bezel. The mechanical spring-driven movement features a striking mechanism on a wire gong. The rear movement plate bears a circular impressed mark with a central eagle motif surrounded by the text J A P Y F R E R E S & C I E. It also carries the stamped numbers 8 8 0 and 2 1. The two matching rectangular side vases repeat the slate, marble, and gilded decorative scheme of the clock.
