Lot 85:
Victorian Sterling Silver Two Handled Sugar Bowl by Charles Boyton London 1891
Description
A Victorian sterling silver two-handled sugar bowl or trophy cup featuring ornate Late Victorian Rococo Revival decoration. The circular body is decorated with repoussé and chased floral motifs, including chrysanthemums and composite flowers, set within diagonal fluting and scrolling C-scrolls. The bowl features two C-shaped scrolling handles and a flared scalloped rim. One side of the body bears an engraved presentation inscription within a scroll-bordered cartouche. The inscription, while worn, reads S. W. N. FROM W. A. BEAR. 18th May 1891. The base of the bowl is struck with British hallmarks: a separate shield-shaped punch to the left contains the letters C B, identifying the maker as Charles Boyton II; the primary grouping includes a lowercase letter q in a shield-shaped punch for the year 1891, a leopard’s head (without crown) for the London assay office, and a lion passant standard mark for sterling silver. A small circular punch mark is also visible on the base.
Weight: 123.2g.
