Description

Samuel Howitt (c.1765–1822). A set of four hand-coloured etchings on paper depicting various stages of a traditional fox hunt. The individual plates are titled FOX-HUNTING P. 1, P. 3, P. 5, and P. 6. Each print bears the inscribed mark Howitt in et f in the lower-left corner of the plate, attributing the design and execution to the British sporting artist Samuel Howitt. The works include individual publication dates in the lower-right margin: Plate 1 is dated Octr 15th 1798; Plate 3 is dated Novr 20th 1798; Plate 5 is dated Octr 16th 1799; and Plate 6 is dated Feby 21st 1799. The subject matter features hunters in traditional red coats on horseback accompanied by packs of hounds navigating wooded countryside and jumping fences. Each print is presented in a dark-toned frame with a gold-beaded inner edge and a cream-coloured mount.
