Lot 109:
A Collection of British Royal Commemorative Ceramics
Description
A collection of fifteen pieces of British Royal commemorative ceramic ware, including bone china, earthenware, and stoneware, celebrating various royal milestones. The collection encompasses items commemorating the 1953 Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, the 1977 Silver Jubilee, and the 1981 Wedding of HRH The Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer.
Items commemorating the 1953 Coronation include a large tankard decorated with the Royal Coat of Arms, various commemorative mugs, a side plate, a small fluted bowl, and a transfer-printed vase. The 1977 Silver Jubilee is represented by two tall white tankards, one marked 1977, and a commemorative goblet featuring a gilded interior and portraits of Her Majesty and HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The 1981 Royal Wedding items consist of a twin-handled commemorative mug and a square-shaped dish, both featuring heart-framed portraits of the couple and the date 29th July 1981.
Additional pieces include a large brown glazed stoneware tankard with a crest, a cream jug with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, a small white ceramic bell, and various smaller cups. The decoration across the collection primarily consists of multi-coloured transfer-printed portraits, royal cyphers (ER), coats of arms, and floral borders. Several pieces feature gilded rims and highlights. While maker’s marks are not clearly visible in the provided image, the items are consistent with production from various British potteries known for commemorative wares, such as Alfred Meakin and Myott.
