Description

An intricately carved Anglo-Burmese style hardwood occasional table dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. The octagonal top features dense high-relief decoration, including a central circular medallion depicting a phoenix (Feng Huang) surrounded by scrolling foliage. This central motif is encircled by concentric registers of further foliate scrolls and mythical beasts, including lions and dragons, all contained within a border of stylised lotus petals. The top is supported by a central column further embellished with three large, three-dimensionally carved dragons. These dragons serve as the primary supports and legs for the piece, featuring scaly bodies and sinuous forms. The base reflects the octagonal form of the top and is finished with a repeating carved scroll pattern. The piece is constructed from a dark stained hardwood, possibly padauk or rosewood.
