Description

This collection consists of three English hammered silver coins spanning the medieval and early modern periods. The central and largest specimen is a silver groat of Edward III (r. 1327–1377), produced at the London mint. The obverse depicts a crowned facing bust within a tressure of arches, with a legend starting EDWARD. The reverse features a long cross with three pellets in each angle and two concentric circles of inscriptions; the inner circle reads CIVI TAS LON DON and the outer circle bears the Latin legend POSVI DEVM ADIVTORE MEVM. To the right is a smaller hammered silver penny, also from the London mint and dating to the Edwardian period (Edward I-III). Its obverse shows a facing bust with an inscription reading EDWARDVS, while the reverse has a long cross with pellets and the CIVI TAS LON DON mint mark. The coin on the left is a small hammered silver penny from the Tudor period, likely Elizabeth I (r. 1558–1603). The obverse shows a worn facing bust and the reverse displays a quarterly shield over a long cross. All three coins are struck in silver and demonstrate the irregular flans characteristic of hammered manufacture.
