A Collection of Blue and White Delftware Tiles in a Wooden Frame

The auction will start in __ days and __ hours __ minutes

Description

This assembly comprises multiple tin-glazed earthenware tiles, commonly known as delftware, mounted in a checkerboard grid within a simple wooden frame. The display consists of decorated tiles alternating with plain tiles. Each tile is hand-painted in cobalt blue on a cream ground and features traditional ox-head corner motifs. The decorated tiles depict various figures engaged in rural and agricultural labours, primarily focused on viticulture and winemaking, such as hoeing, pruning vines with a billhook, coopering barrels, and harvesting grapes into baskets. The naive, folk-art style of the figures is consistent with the eighteenth-century Dutch Delft tradition or English centres such as Bristol and Liverpool. No manufacturer marks or signatures are visible on the front of the tiles, and the frame obscures the reverse.
