Lot 224:
A Neoclassical Silk Needlework and Wash Picture, British or Continental School, Late 18th or Early 19th Century
Description
A late 18th or early 19th-century needlework and wash picture depicting a female figure and a young child in a pastoral landscape. The work is executed on a silk support using a combination of fine silk embroidery and watercolour wash. The figures’ garments, including a pink and gold-toned classical robe, are rendered in various silk thread stitches to create texture and depth. The surrounding trees and foreground foliage are also detailed in silk needlework. The figures’ flesh tones and the background sky are finished with hand-applied watercolour washes. The artwork is presented behind glass with a black and gold-bordered mount. The piece is housed in a substantial, ornate gilded gesso frame featuring acanthus leaf corner ornaments and beaded borders. No signatures, dates, or inscriptions are visible on the front of the artwork.
