Lot 232:
A Trio of English Ceramic Wares Including a Clarice Cliff Lidded Tureen and a Pair of Reticulated Pedestal Comports
Description
This lot comprises a Clarice Cliff lidded tureen and a pair of matching reticulated pedestal comports. The Clarice Cliff tureen is an earthenware vegetable dish of oval form featuring twin integral handles and a stepped, stylised lid finial. It is finished in a cream glaze with two horizontal cobalt blue bands and gilt-lined rims. The base is marked with a printed Clarice Cliff signature in cursive script above Newport Pottery England, a separate Made in England stamp, and a hand-painted blue number 7238. The pair of comports are of circular form with wide, intricately pierced borders and are supported by ornate pedestal bases with four scrolled feet. They are decorated with gilt motifs, including a central floral medallion and repeating fleur-de-lis and geometric patterns on the reticulated borders. There are no visible maker marks on the comports, which are in a style characteristic of late 19th or early 20th-century English ceramic production such as that by Davenport or Minton.
