Description

A Burleigh Ware (Burgess & Leigh Ltd.) Art Deco earthenware jug of striking angular, geometric form. The vessel features a multi-faceted lozenge body with a distinctive triangular handle and a pinched pouring spout. It is decorated in relief with a maritime theme, featuring a central sailing ship with ochre-coloured sails and a turquoise hull set above stylised blue swimming fish and vertical reed motifs. The body is finished in a pale yellow glaze with an all-over embossed scroll pattern. The rim and base sections are accented with a mottled orange and brown textured glaze, and a turquoise stripe highlights the handle. The base bears a green printed circular mark containing the words BURLEIGH at the top and WARE below, flanking a central graphic of a beehive and wheat, with ESTD 1851 and a rectangular box containing B. & L. LTD. ENGLAND. Printed in black below the factory mark is REGISTRATION APPLIED FOR, and the number 5163 is hand-painted in a reddish-brown glaze. Produced in Burslem, Staffordshire, England, circa 1930s.
