Lot 273:
A Pair of Late Victorian Spindle-Back Side Chairs with Caned Seats
Description
This pair of side chairs is constructed from a polished hardwood, likely beech or walnut, with a warm medium-brown finish. Each chair features a broad, curved, solid wood crest rail supported by two shaped uprights and a gallery of seven ring-turned spindles. The chairs have hand-caned seats with rounded corners, set into a moulded frame. They are supported by tapering, ring-turned front legs and splayed back legs, all interconnected by matching turned stretchers in an H-frame configuration. The pieces reflect the Aesthetic Movement influence of the late 19th to early 20th century through the use of delicate turned components and traditional joinery. No maker’s marks, labels, or stamps are visible on the exterior surfaces.
