Lot 292:
A Japanese Lacquer Box and a Collection of Vintage Costume Jewellery
Description
This lot comprises a Japanese lacquer box and a collection of vintage costume jewellery. The rectangular box is crafted from wood with a black lacquer finish and features maki-e style decoration on the lid. The design depicts three birds in flight over stylized reeds or bamboo, rendered in gold-toned and polychrome pigments against a dark blue and black ground, framed by a thin gilt border. The box is attributed to the late Meiji (1868 to 1912) or Taisho (1912 to 1926) period. The contents include an assortment of 20th-century costume jewellery, featuring multiple strands of faux pearl necklaces, silver-toned bangles and chains, beaded necklaces, and various metal charms. Also contained within the box is a small, circular porcelain covered box or compact, decorated in the Satsuma style with a central floral and urn motif in orange, red, and gold enamels.
