Lot 8:
A Hand-Painted Heraldic Wooden Shield Plaque Depicting the Arms of Flanders and a Barry Field with Decrescent
Description
This hand-painted heraldic plaque is executed in opaque pigments on a shield-shaped wooden board. The composition features a shield party per pale. The dexter side depicts a lion rampant sable, armed and langued gules, on a yellow field, which corresponds to the coat of arms of Flanders. The sinister side shows horizontal bars of black and yellow, charged with a central white decrescent moon. The work is rendered in a flat, naive style with visible brushwork and is enclosed by a yellow painted border. The reverse is finished with red paint and retains two metal studs with an associated twine hanging loop. The studs bear indistinct impressed marks, likely manufacturer’s stamps for the fasteners rather than the artist. No signature or date is visible on the piece.
Approximately 19 cm x 15 cm.
