Lot 184:
An Early 20th Century Oak Framed Needlepoint Fire Screen Depicting an English Pastoral Scene
Description
An early to mid-20th-century fire guard featuring a needlepoint tapestry panel housed within an oak frame with a medium-brown finish. The rectangular frame is supported by twin turned side columns and stands on splayed scroll-type feet connected by a lower stretcher. A small metal loop is attached to the top of the frame for handling. The central needlepoint panel, worked in coloured wool or cotton threads on a canvas ground, depicts a quintessentially English pastoral scene. The composition features a thatched cottage with a brick chimney and a secondary gabled building, surrounded by lush garden foliage and flowers. In the foreground, a horse-drawn cart driven by two figures is preceded by a small dog, all set against a backdrop of mature trees and a pale blue sky. The construction and subject matter are characteristic of British domestic craftsmanship from the 1920s-1940s.
