Lot 199:
Three Late 19th Century Ceramic Items including a Commemorative Terracotta Jug dated 1886 and Salt-Glazed Stoneware in the style of Doulton Lambeth
Description
A group of three late 19th-century ceramic items. The collection includes a bulbous terracotta-coloured earthenware jug featuring a pinched rim and a handle modelled as a rustic tree branch. The vessel is finished with a terracotta glaze and decorated with high-relief applied sprigged ornamentation depicting a grapevine with green leaves and black bunches of grapes. Applied white slip lettering on the front of the jug reads LOUIS 1886 MA:NIN.
The lot also includes two pieces of English salt-glazed stoneware in the style of Doulton Lambeth, comprising a small cream jug and a matching straight-sided mug. Both items feature a traditional two-tone finish with a dark brown dipped upper section and a buff-coloured lower body. The decoration consists of applied sprigged relief tavern and harvest scenes typical of London and Midlands potteries of the late Victorian period.
