Description

A pair of tin-glazed earthenware covered jars of octagonal form, decorated in a traditional Delft blue and white palette. Each jar features a tapering body with rounded shoulders and a short neck, topped by an octagonal domed lid. The lids are surmounted by finials depicting a seated lion (foo dog) resting a paw upon a shield. The hand-painted decoration includes a central landscape scene featuring a long-tailed bird, possibly a pheasant or peacock, amidst flowering peonies and dense foliage. The shoulders are adorned with a wide band of stylized lappet panels containing floral motifs, framed by scrolled borders. The cobalt blue application varies in intensity, showing both dark, saturated linework and lighter washes within the petals. The underside of each jar bears a hand-painted mark in blue script. The first jar is marked with a cursive v followed by Delft on the upper line, and dec 57; on the second line. The second jar bears a matching mark, v Delft over dec 57;. The unglazed foot rims show some shelf wear.

Height: 33.5 cm (to the top of the finial).
