A sterling silver-backed hairbrush with an Art Deco engine-turned design. The silver casing features a guilloche sunburst pattern radiating from a central vacant circular cartouche on the back, enclosed by a scrolled foliate border. The handle is decorated with linear engine-turning and includes a rectangular cartouche. The silver is fitted over a wooden mount holding natural bristles. Struck on the side of the silver casing are four hallmarks in separate rectangular punches. These consist of an uppercase letter O in a square shield with clipped corners, an anchor, a walking lion passant, and the letters B & S Ld. The marks identify the material as sterling silver, assayed in Birmingham in 1938, and manufactured by Broadway and Co.
